Once considered to be a precious metal, it wasn’t until 1886 that aluminium began to be extracted in commercial quantities. Until then the metal was considered to be more valuable than gold, with the French emperor, Napoleon III ordering dinner sets in aluminium for his most revered guests. As commercial extraction processes were discovered, aluminium lost its status as a precious metal and instead became highly sought after by industry. It is fortuitous then, that it is the most abundant metal on Earth and also has the advantage of being 100% recyclable.
